“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others” – Mahatma Gandhi
They could have spent the day shopping, eating out, or at the movies. They could have slept late, given it was a weekend. And yet, on a bright Saturday morning recently, a large group of young employees of a corporate based in Bengaluru chose to spend their day at a lake, beautifying the walls around it.
They were not paid for it; no one gave them certificates of appreciation or praise, and yet, they took joy in being a part of United Way’s work. These young volunteers were living out Mahatma Gandhi’s words, “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” They were also subscribing to United Way Bengaluru’s belief in the power of volunteering.
United Way Bengaluru regularly hosts volunteering events and has engaged over 9000 volunteers for its Wake the Lake campaign alone. Volunteers also visit anganawadis to spend quality time with the little children, or to engage in refurbishment activities. The underlying purpose in all volunteering activities is the common urge to ‘Do Good’. One volunteer says happily at an event to honour the girl child, “When I see happiness on the faces of these little girls, I feel lucky that I have got this opportunity to serve them.”
“Rejuvenating a lake is like rejuvenating oneself,” says another volunteer who has spent hours in the sun cleaning the area around the lake. Volunteering at United Way is at the very core of its work. Believing in the power of every individual to give, United Way Bengaluru pro-actively engages corporate employees, students, home-makers and the public at large to contribute with their time and effort. Live United is the mantra! Work United is the ethos! United we can do a lot is the belief!
