PROJECT – OXYGEN TO RURAL AND URBAN KARNATAKA

Project Description

Roughly one out of every 6 people who get affected by COVID-19 becomes seriously ill and develops difficulty breathing. The death toll from the coronavirus in India has risen to an all-time high of over 4000 per day and a majority of this is due to the existing public health infrastructure not being able to cope with the demand. The need for Oxygen is the key factor in being able to respond to this crisis and the private sector can play a very important role to improve the effectiveness of the existing public health infrastructure by augmenting Oxygen cylinders to reach district-level hospitals through efficient and fast supply chains that can respond to the needs in these hospitals.

Rationale of the Project

The Covid-19 pandemic has reached a stage where a rapid and focussed response is required to save lives. While urban populations have access to a large network of Government & private healthcare, the same is lacking in more peri-urban & rural areas. The private sector can help by energizing the procurement & supply chain for medical equipment.

Beneficiaries of the Project

The peri-urban & rural population of the selected districts in the State of Karnataka.

Project Goal

To rapidly set up fixed medical Oxygen infrastructure at District Headquarter Hospitals across the selected districts in the State of Karnataka.

Objectives of the Project

To provide high capacity fixed Oxygen cylinders to District Hospitals within Karnataka to manage the oxygen shortage that the state is currently facing in public healthcare infrastructure. By having this critical infrastructure in place, it can be easily plugged into the existing government oxygen procurement value chains.

Activities:

  • Procuring 860 high capacity 47 litre fixed storage cylinders from vendors in Mumbai, Maharashtra.
  • Coordinate the logistics of the oxygen cylinders from Mumbai by roadways to be dropped off at each of the District Hospitals en route to Bangalore
  • Coordinate with the District Health Officers for installation.

Expected outcomes

At the end of the project period, Karnataka would have transitioned to the Mumbai model of medical oxygen supply, logistics & management. The project will have played a crucial role in alleviating the oxygen shortages faced by District Hospitals and saved countless lives depending on regular oxygen supply for their survival. Government oxygen procurement processes will be revamped rapidly in a short period of time and will be put to the best use both for the immediate pandemic and any such health outbreaks in the future.
