Lack of knowledge about menstrual hygiene coupled with the inability to buy napkins and other sanitary products affects the health of adolescent girls. Prevalent unhygienic practices not only make conditions uncomfortable for girls but also cause diseases and infections, some of which have lifelong effects.
As per official data, only 36% of girls and women have access to sanitary napkins in India while a majority of them rely on outdated, unhygienic methods during menstruation. A report (2014) by NGO Dasra estimated that about 23 million girls in India drop out of school annually, because of inadequate menstrual hygiene management facilities, lack of sanitary napkins, and awareness about menstruation. The girls, who do not drop out, on average miss out on 5 days of school every month.
